Repair Guide

The next 60 seconds determine whether your MacBook lives or dies.

Spilled coffee on your MacBook? Knocked over a glass of water? Every second counts. Liquid damage is one of the most common — and most preventable — causes of permanent MacBook failure. Here’s exactly what to do.

STEP 1 Power Off Immediately

This is the single most important thing you can do. Do not wait. Do not save your work. Do not close apps. Hold the power button down until the MacBook shuts off completely.

Electricity and water are a catastrophic combination. Every second your MacBook stays powered on while wet increases the risk of short circuits burning out your logic board — the most expensive component in any MacBook.

✓ Do This

  • Hold power button to force shutdown
  • Disconnect MagSafe / USB-C charger
  • Remove any connected accessories
  • Tilt MacBook to drain liquid out
  • Gently blot surface with a dry cloth

✗ Never Do This

  • Try to power it back on to check
  • Plug it in to charge
  • Use a hair dryer on it
  • Put it in rice (see below)
  • Shake it vigorously

STEP 2 Remove External Power & Accessories

Unplug the charger, any USB hubs, external drives, and anything else connected to your Mac. If you have a MacBook model where the battery is accessible (older non-Retina models), remove it. For all modern MacBooks, this isn’t possible without tools — don’t force it.

If you spilled a lot of liquid and the MacBook is soaked, tilt it at an angle — keyboard facing down — to let gravity pull the liquid away from the logic board and toward the keyboard, which is easier and cheaper to replace.

STEP 3 Blot — Don’t Wipe

Use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth and gently blot the exterior. Do not rub — this can push liquid further into openings. Pay attention to the keyboard, ports, speaker grilles, and the hinge area where liquid loves to collect.

If you have isopropyl alcohol (90%+) on hand, you can lightly dampen a cloth with it and blot the keyboard — alcohol displaces water and evaporates quickly. But don’t pour it directly onto the machine.

⚠ Common Myth

The “put it in rice” advice is wrong. Rice does not absorb moisture fast enough to make a meaningful difference, and rice dust and starch can actually get inside your ports and make things worse. Skip the rice entirely.

STEP 4 Let It Air Dry — But Don’t Wait Too Long

Place your MacBook open at a 90-degree angle (like a tent, keyboard facing down) in a warm, dry area with good airflow. Leave it for a minimum of 24–48 hours before attempting to power it on again.

However — and this is critical — liquid damage gets worse over time, not better. Even if your MacBook appears to dry out and power back on, the liquid leaves behind corrosive residue. Sugary drinks like coffee, juice, or soda are especially destructive because the sugar and acids continue corroding your logic board long after the visible moisture is gone.

STEP 5 Get It Professionally Cleaned ASAP

The only real solution for liquid damage is a professional ultrasonic clean and logic board inspection. A technician will disassemble the MacBook, identify corroded components, clean the board with ultrasonic equipment and specialized cleaning solutions, and replace any components that have been damaged.

The longer you wait, the worse the corrosion gets. A MacBook that seemed “fine” after drying out for a week can fail suddenly weeks or months later as the corrosion slowly eats through traces on the logic board. If you’re in Bangkok, bring it in within 24–48 hours of the incident for the best chance of a full recovery.

What About the Data?

Even if the logic board is beyond repair, your data is often recoverable. In most MacBooks, the SSD is a separate component from the logic board. A skilled technician can often transfer or recover your data even from a severely damaged machine.

This is why you should never power a liquid-damaged MacBook back on to try to back up your files first — doing so dramatically increases the risk of permanent data loss if a short circuit occurs.

What’s the Repair Cost?

Liquid damage repair costs vary depending on how quickly you act and what was damaged:

Best case — caught immediately, logic board undamaged: ultrasonic clean + inspection, typically affordable.

Common case — some corrosion present: component-level repair on the logic board, replacing burned or corroded chips. Dr. MacBook specializes in this type of microsoldering repair — we repair logic boards, not just replace them, which keeps costs significantly lower than Apple’s flat-rate replacement quotes.

Worst case — severely corroded or burned board after delayed treatment: extensive microsoldering or board replacement may be necessary.

In all cases, we provide a free diagnostic so you know exactly what you’re dealing with before committing to any repair.

The Bottom Line

Speed is everything with liquid damage. The faster you power off and get the machine to a professional, the better your odds. Most liquid-damaged MacBooks can be saved — but only if you act fast and don’t make the situation worse by trying to power them on or use home remedies.
