The Butterfly Keyboard Era (2015–2019)
Apple’s butterfly mechanism was designed to make MacBooks thinner. It succeeded — but at a massive cost to reliability. The single-hinge design was so fragile that a single grain of dust could kill a key. A tiny crumb under the spacebar could render it useless.
The affected models include the MacBook (Retina, 12-inch), MacBook Pro 13″ and 15″ (2016–2019), and MacBook Air (2018–2019). Apple eventually admitted the design was flawed and launched a free Keyboard Service Program — but that program expired in 2024. If your butterfly keyboard Mac is failing now, you’re paying out of pocket.
And Bangkok makes it worse. Our city’s fine dust, humidity, and airborne particles clog the butterfly mechanism faster than in cooler, drier climates. We’ve seen 2017 MacBook Pros with dead keyboards that were used exclusively in air-conditioned offices — the dust still finds its way in.

If you own a 2016–2019 MacBook Pro or 2018–2019 MacBook Air and your keyboard is acting up, it’s not a matter of “if” — it’s a matter of “when” the rest of the keys follow. These keyboards were fundamentally defective.
The Magic Keyboard (2020+) — Better, But Not Bulletproof
Apple returned to scissor switches in 2020, branding them “Magic Keyboard.” The travel is deeper, the mechanism is more reliable, and a grain of dust won’t kill your spacebar anymore. It’s a genuine improvement.
But it’s not indestructible. Liquid spills still destroy keys. Crumbs still get stuck. And heavy dust accumulation — especially in Bangkok — can still cause problems over time. The good news: individual key replacement is possible on most modern models, and the parts are more readily available in Thailand.
Home Fixes You Can Try First
Before you book a repair, there are a few things worth trying at home. These won’t fix physical damage, but they can resolve minor debris and software glitches.
1. Compressed Air (Apple’s Official Method)
Hold your Mac at a 75-degree angle, spray compressed air left-to-right across the keyboard, rotate, and repeat. This can dislodge dust particles trapped under the keys. Reality check: It helps with light dust. It’s useless for liquid damage or broken clips.
2. Isopropyl Alcohol Cleaning
Use 99% isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab to clean around the edges of sticky keys. The alcohol evaporates quickly and won’t leave residue. Warning: Don’t flood the keyboard. Liquid under keys can kill the backlight or short the logic board.
3. Reset NVRAM / SMC
For Intel Macs, an NVRAM or SMC reset can resolve strange keyboard behavior caused by firmware glitches. On Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and later), simply shut down and wait 10 seconds before restarting. It’s rare, but it’s free and worth trying.

Best for one or two broken keys with an intact mechanism. We source individual key caps and butterfly clips, but availability is limited for older models. Cost in Bangkok: ฿300–800 per key. If individual keys aren’t available, we may need to harvest from a donor keyboard.
Full Top Case Replacement
Best for widespread failure, liquid damage, or when individual keys aren’t available. On most MacBooks, the keyboard, battery, trackpad, and palm rest are glued together into one assembly. Replacing the keyboard means replacing the entire top case. Cost in Bangkok: ฿4,500–12,000 depending on model. Time: same-day to 2–3 days if parts are in stock.
Logic Board Level Repair
Best for when the keyboard works with an external USB keyboard but the built-in one doesn’t. This points to a flex cable or keyboard controller issue on the logic board — not the keyboard itself. Cost: ฿2,500–5,500. Much cheaper than replacing a working keyboard.
Replace the Keyboard or Use an External One?
If your Mac is a desktop replacement and rarely leaves the house, an external keyboard is a cheap workaround. But if you need portability, there’s no substitute for fixing the built-in one.

- ✓Don’t eat over your Mac. Crumbs + humidity = sticky paste under keys. It’s the most common preventable cause of keyboard failure we see.
- ✓Skip the keyboard cover. We don’t recommend them — they trap heat against the keyboard and can damage your screen coating when the lid is closed.
- ✓Clean your desk area weekly. Bangkok dust is fine and relentless. A quick wipe of your workspace reduces what ends up inside your Mac.
- ✓Keep liquids away. Coffee + MacBook = the most expensive drink you’ll ever buy. One spill can destroy the keyboard, trackpad, and logic board in seconds.
- ✓Get an annual checkup. If you type heavily, bring your Mac in once a year for a professional internal cleaning (฿500–1,000). It prevents dust buildup before it becomes a problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace just one key on a butterfly keyboard?
Sometimes, but butterfly key caps and mechanisms are fragile and often discontinued. We usually recommend a full top-case replacement for reliability — it’s more expensive upfront, but it won’t fail again in three months.
Does Apple still fix butterfly keyboards for free?
No — the Keyboard Service Program ended in 2024. All repairs are now paid. Apple’s out-of-warranty price for a top case replacement is typically ฿12,000–18,000. Independent shops in Bangkok usually charge half that.
My “E” and “R” keys stopped working after a rainstorm. Is it dead?
Not necessarily. A dead row often points to liquid damage on the keyboard flex cable — not the keys themselves. This is frequently repairable without replacing the whole top case. Bring it in for diagnosis; we can usually tell within 30 minutes.
How long does a keyboard replacement take?
