Every week someone walks into our shop and asks the same question: “Should I fix this, or just buy a new one?” It’s a fair question — and the answer isn’t always “repair.” Here’s how we think about it, and how you should too.

The 50% Rule
\n
The simplest way to decide: if the repair cost is more than 50% of what your MacBook is currently worth, you’re usually better off putting that money toward a replacement. If the repair is under 50%, it almost always makes sense to fix it.
\n
For example, a 2020 MacBook Air is worth roughly 15,000–20,000 baht today. If the repair costs 5,000 baht, that’s an easy yes. If it costs 12,000 baht, you should think carefully — especially if the Mac is likely to develop other problems soon.

This isn’t a hard rule, and there are exceptions — but it’s a reliable starting point for most decisions.

Repairs That Almost Always Make Sense
\n
Some repairs are straightforward, affordable, and give your Mac years of extra life. If your problem is on this list, it’s almost certainly worth fixing.

- ✓Battery replacement — a worn battery is the single most common repair we do. A new battery costs a fraction of a new Mac and makes your machine feel brand new. If your Mac shuts down at 30%, lasts only an hour, or shows “Service Recommended,” a battery swap is the answer.
- ✓Screen replacement — cracked screens look dramatic, but the repair is routine. Your logic board, SSD, and data are all fine — only the display panel needs replacing.
- ✓Keyboard issues — sticky, unresponsive, or ghost-typing keys. Especially common on 2016–2019 butterfly keyboard models. A keyboard replacement restores full functionality.
- ✓Charging port repair — if your Mac only charges at certain angles or won’t charge at all, a USB-C or MagSafe port replacement is quick and affordable.
- ✓SSD upgrade (older models) — if your Mac is slow because of storage, not processing power, an SSD upgrade can transform its performance for a fraction of the cost of a new machine.
- ✓Fan cleaning and thermal paste — if your Mac overheats, throttles, or the fan runs loud constantly, a professional internal clean can dramatically improve performance.

💡 Rule of Thumb

If the repair fixes one specific problem and everything else works well, it’s almost always worth doing. Macs are built to last — a single repair can extend a machine’s life by 3–5 years.

Repairs That Might Not Be Worth It
\n
Some repairs are expensive, risky, or only buy you a limited amount of extra time. These situations deserve careful thought before committing.

- ✗Multiple problems at once — if the battery is dead, the screen is cracked, and the keyboard doesn’t work, the combined repair cost often exceeds the Mac’s value. Multiple failures usually mean the machine has been through a lot.
- ✗Severe liquid damage with corrosion — a light spill caught early is usually fixable. But heavy liquid damage with widespread corrosion on the logic board means even a successful repair may not last. Components weakened by corrosion can fail again weeks or months later.
- ✗Logic board failure on a very old Mac — board-level repair is skilled work and can be expensive. On a Mac that’s already 7–8 years old, the investment may not make sense when the machine is nearing the end of its software support life anyway.
- ✗Your Mac no longer runs the latest macOS — if Apple has dropped support for your model, you won’t receive security updates. The Mac still works, but its useful life is more limited. Consider this when deciding how much to invest in repairs.

It’s Not Just About Money
\n
Cost is the biggest factor, but it’s not the only one. Think about these things too:

Your data. If your Mac won’t turn on and you don’t have a backup, data recovery may be a reason to repair even if the Mac itself isn’t worth much. Getting your photos, documents, and projects back can be priceless.
\n
Your time. Setting up a brand new Mac — reinstalling apps, transferring files, re-configuring everything — takes time. If a quick repair gets your existing Mac working again, the convenience can be worth it even if the numbers are borderline.
\n
Environmental impact. Repairing extends the life of a device that already exists. Manufacturing a new MacBook has a significant carbon footprint. If you care about sustainability, repair is almost always the greener choice.
\n
Performance needs. Be honest about what you actually use your Mac for. If it’s browsing, email, documents, and video calls, a 2019 MacBook Pro is still perfectly capable. You don’t need an M5 chip to write emails. But if you’re editing 4K video or running heavy development tools, an older Mac may genuinely be too slow — and no repair will fix that.

💡 The Real Question

Don’t ask “is this Mac worth repairing?” Ask “will this Mac still do what I need after the repair?” If the answer is yes, repair. If you’ve been struggling with its speed even before it broke, replacement makes more sense.

What About the M5 MacBooks?
\n
Apple released the M5 MacBook Air and M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pro in March 2026. They’re excellent machines — faster, more efficient, and starting from $1,099 USD for the Air. But that doesn’t automatically make your current Mac obsolete.
\n
The M1 and M2 Macs from 2020–2023 are still fast, still supported, and still perfectly capable for most tasks. A battery swap or screen repair on an M1 MacBook Air is far cheaper than buying a new M5, and the performance difference for everyday use is minimal.
\n
Where the upgrade makes sense is if you’re on an Intel Mac (2020 or older) and Apple has dropped macOS support for your model. In that case, a major repair might not be the best use of money — you’d be fixing a machine that’s already at the end of its software life.
