How to Run AI on Your MacBook: A Practical Guide (2026)
on Your MacBook
From Apple Intelligence to local LLMs — what actually works on your Mac, and what hardware you need.
By Dr. MacBook Thailand · Bangkok · Updated 2026
Every week we get customers asking the same thing: “Can I run AI on my MacBook?” The short answer is yes — but how well depends on which Mac you have and what kind of AI work you want to do. Here’s what actually works in 2026.
OPTIONS
Three Ways to Use AI on Your Mac
You’ve got three main routes, and most people end up using a combination:
1. Apple Intelligence (Built-in)
If you have a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) running macOS Sequoia or later, you already have AI on your machine. Apple Intelligence handles:
- ✓ Writing tools in Mail, Notes, and Pages
- ✓ Image generation and cleanup in Photos
- ✓ Siri improvements and context awareness
- ✓ Smart Reply and summarize features
Hardware requirement: Neural Engine (NPU) built into all M-series chips. Apple Silicon Macs handle this locally — no internet required for most features, and your data stays on your machine.
2. Local LLMs with Ollama
Want to run ChatGPT-like AI without sending data to the cloud? Ollama lets you download and run open-source models like Llama, Mistral, and Gemma directly on your Mac.
What you need:
| Mac Type | What Works | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Mac (8GB RAM) | Small models only (1-3B parameters) | Slow |
| Intel Mac (16GB+ RAM) | Small to medium models (7B parameters) | Usable |
| M1/M2 Mac (8GB RAM) | Small models (7B parameters) | Good |
| M1/M2 Mac (16GB+ RAM) | Medium models (7-13B parameters) | Fast |
| M3/M4 Mac (16GB+ RAM) | Large models (13-70B parameters) | Very Fast |
| M5/M6 Mac (16GB+ RAM) | Very large models (70B+ parameters) | Extremely Fast |
Installation (one command):
curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh
Then run a model:
ollama run llama3.2
3. Cloud AI Apps
Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. These apps work on any Mac with internet:
- ✓ ChatGPT — OpenAI’s official Mac app with keyboard shortcuts
- ✓ Claude — Anthropic’s assistant, excellent for long documents
- ✓ Perplexity — AI search with source citations
- ✓ Grammarly — AI writing assistance built into every app
HARDWARE
What Mac Do You Need?
We’ve tested local AI on dozens of Macs in our shop. Here’s the honest breakdown:
Intel Macs (2016-2020)
They can run local AI, but it’s not a great experience. The CPU isn’t optimized for neural network math. If you have an Intel Mac and want to experiment with AI:
- Stick to small models (1-7B parameters)
- Use cloud services for heavy work
- Consider upgrading if AI is central to your workflow
M1/M2 Macs (2020-2024)
The sweet spot for most users. The Neural Engine accelerates Apple Intelligence features, and you can run decent-sized local models. Get 16GB RAM if possible — 8GB works but limits model size.
M3/M4 Macs (2024-2025)
The best AI experience on a Mac. Faster Neural Engine, more efficient memory usage. If you’re serious about local AI, this is where you want to be.
M5/M6 Macs (2025-2026)
The cutting edge. These machines can run the largest local models available — including 70B+ parameter models that rival cloud AI in quality. If you’re doing professional AI work, video generation, or running multiple models simultaneously, this is your tier.
PRACTICAL USES
What Can You Actually Do?
Here’s what customers tell us they’re using AI for:
- ✓ Writing assistance — Draft emails, refine documents, check tone
- ✓ Code help — Explain code, debug errors, write snippets
- ✓ Research — Summarize articles, answer questions, explore topics
- ✓ Image editing — Remove objects, generate images, upscale
- ✓ Translation — Real-time translation in conversations
HONEST VERDICT
Should You Upgrade Your Mac for AI?
Probably not yet.
If you have an Intel Mac from 2018-2020, it’s still perfectly usable for cloud-based AI. The Mac doesn’t do the heavy lifting — OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic’s servers do. Your machine just displays the results.
Where local AI matters:
- Privacy — sensitive documents that can’t leave your machine
- Offline work — no internet, no problem
- Cost — no subscription fees for local models
- Customization — fine-tune models for specific tasks
If none of those apply to you, stick with cloud AI on whatever Mac you have.
But if your Intel Mac is struggling with basic tasks, or you’re buying new anyway, the jump to Apple Silicon is significant — not just for AI, but for overall speed and battery life. Read our repair vs. replace guide if you’re on the fence.
